Late Night Sketch

Another quiet night here at the studio sketching out a scene from the photo archives of photographer Nancy Huang. She kindly gave me permission to her archive of photos related to Myanmar laborers, ethnic communities, and artisans. Here I’m working from a b/w photo of a river boat loading cargo to be delivered up- or down-stream. This same scene could’ve been photographed in the 1800s as the daily rhythm of life along the Irrawaddy hasn’t changed much. Hard work, low pay and poor living conditions are still the norm. I’m hoping my watercolor will capture some of this.
